By Shandon Harbour, President & CEO of ABC San Diego

I am still reeling from the excitement of this year’s Excellence in Construction Awards ceremony. As many of you know, the EIC Event – which was held on May 1st – showcases the most impressive building projects and contractors in Southern California. The winning projects have a shot at receiving an award at the 37th National Excellence in Construction Gala in March 2026.

This year (unlike many award ceremonies I’ve been to) the program moved along at a thrilling clip. Happy hour was abuzz with anticipation of which finalists would take home awards and the energy seemed to build from there, as the best of the best were recognized for their exemplary talent and work ethic in the field of construction – along with some raucous cowbell ringing!

In addition to being bowled over by the accomplishments of these hard-working men and women, it was even more special to get to know the people behind these projects and be reminded that caring and compassion are the attributes that make up this family we know as ABC San Diego.

I’d like to share some of the highlights from this amazing event…

We are part of a passionate and caring family

People don’t have to win an award to be appreciated for contributing to our industry. The ceremony kicked off Military Appreciation Month with Col. Earl “The Fighting Pearl” Wederbrook, USMC (Ret.), recognizing a group of Marines who have transitioned into construction. As contractors, these brave individuals uphold the same principles that drove them to serve our country in uniform: patriotism, a tough work ethic, and pride in our country and the work they do every day.

YOU get a cowbell, YOU get a cowbell…!

Our signature cowbells were on every table for those who appreciate that every one of us can always use a little more cowbell. When folks were leaving, many took the cowbells home with them, so I can happily report that our cowbells are making their way back to ABC member companies throughout the region. Ring them proudly, my friends!

Our ABC’r of the Year

One of the most prestigious and longest running awards is the ABC’r of the Year Award that goes to the volunteer who has gone above and beyond in contributing their time and expertise to ABC San Diego. This year, it went to Steven Cabaj. Steven (who hadn’t been expecting to win) had gone to the bar, so when I announced his name, someone had to quickly track him down. Once Steven emerged, he was greeted with laughter, applause, and very enthusiastically ringing cowbells.

Special meaning for me

Finally, I wanted to mention a couple presentations that had special meaning for me. Eagle Trophies were given to outstanding projects performed by women-led project management teams. I’ve seen first hand how women leaders in construction foster team cultures where voices are heard and inspire excellence. The teams that came to the stage were committed to the quality of their craft and succeeding through creativity, collaboration, and supporting their coworkers.

Perhaps the most moving part of the night for me was having the opportunity to introduce former ABC San Diego Chair Kevin Strahler and his wife Colleen. As some of you know, Kevin has been battling pancreatic cancer although, thankfully, he is currently in remission. Kevin is a fighter who’s committed to staying connected to ABC San Diego. When he stood, it was hard to keep our composure as attendees expressed their deep-felt gratitude with resounding cheers.
